Polihale Beach Kauai

Polihale Beach on Kauai’s West Shore

If you’ve ever dreamed of being on a desert island and having a perfect beach all to yourself, Polihale is probably as close as you’ll come.  An uninterrupted, 17-mile expanse of white sand, it’s the longest of the Kauai beaches.   Polihale is broken up into several different beaches.  Barking Sands Beach is probably the best known.

The road is often impassable in winter and pretty bad the rest of the year.  The sand gets hot.  Facilities, including drinking water, are few and far between.  And rough currents and rip tides make swimming here dangerous.  But with deserted beaches that are 300 feet wide and dunes that are 100 feet high, Polihale is the Kauai beach no one wants to miss.

Swimmers should head for Queen’s Pond, which is surrounded by a fringing reef that breaks up the waves.  It’s at the south end of Polihale.
