Poipu Beach & South Shore Beaches

Poipu Beach
Surfing in Hawaii is practically a must-do, so be sure to give it a try. You can rent boards at Nukumoi Surf Shop at Brennecke Beach, or from surfing champion Margo Oberg, whom you’ll find in the parking lot between the Sheraton Kauai and Kiahuna Plantation. Rates depend on who you rent from and how long you want the board for, but late one afternoon, we got one for $10.
If you want lessons, you can arrange them through your hotel concierge or through Nukumoi or Margo Oberg. Group lessons start at about $70.
Poipu Beach Park, Brennecke Beach, and Kiahuna Beach are the most popular Kauai surf spots on the South Shore.
The best snorkeling on the South Side is in the cove next to the Beach House Restaurant on Lawai Road. The sandy island at Poipu Beach Park is another good spot. The Costco in Lihue is an inexpensive source for snorkeling equipment. If you prefer to rent, Snorkel Bob’s on Poipu Beach Road will outfit you for about $20 for a week.
To go further afield, take a three-hour Kauai Sea Riders snorkel tour from Kukuiula Harbor on Lawai Road.
The island’s most rewarding scuba dives are just off the Poipu coast. Fathom Five and Seasport Divers offer a variety of trips for novices to experts. Sheraton Caverns and Brennecke’s Ledge are just minutes from the harbor.
