Poipu Beach & South Shore Activities

Shipwreck Beach Poipu Kauai

Shipwrecks Beach on the South Shore of Kauaii

Many Kauai activities don’t start until 9AM or so.  And if your body clock is still on mainland time, you’ll probably be ready to get going early.  So start your day with a sunrise beach walk. There’s a great path from Shipwrecks Beach adjacent to the Grand Hyatt Kauai.   You can park at the lot at the end of Ainako Street.

The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail winds along the rocky coast from Shipwrecks Beach to Kawailoo Bay.  You’ll often see Monk Seals on the beach here and sea turtles in the surf.  During winter, keep an eye out for Humpback Whales too.  Along the trail, there’s a large, limestone cave, some ancient petroglyphs, kiawe trees, and if you’re lucky, a nene – Hawaii’s state bird.

After a brisk morning walk, the smell of bacon back at the Hyatt can be hard to resist.  The Ilimi Terrace there has a breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelets.  Or you can head back toward Poipu to Joe’s on the Green, adjacent to the Kiahuna Golf Club.
